As a Spanish-speaker, I've always had a decent fluency in Spanish. However, given that I'm anxious to improve in all areas of my life, I decided to take Spanish all four years of high school. My last two years consisted in taking AP Spanish courses. I chose not to take IB Spanish because I wanted to take advantage of the available math and science IB courses instead. Nevertheless, I've been satisfied with the amount of cultural exposure I've received through these classes. In retrospect, they've helped me better utilize the language with refined cultural context. My main goals have always been to improve in reading, writing, and speaking. Even though I can hold a conversation in Spanish, I've always lacked a vocabulary big enough to help me when I'm at a loss for words. I've also had minimal knowledge in Hispanic culture, something that would allow my conversations and writings to have a solid topic. Regarding my writing skills, I still hope to write with more flexibility; I want to learn the different sentence structures and rhetorical devices that would elevate my writing. Ever since I identified these weaknesses, I've been working in and out of class to master them. As of right now, my main focus is to better comprehend Spanish literature; that way I can simultaneously study writing structures and expand my vocabulary.
